About Us

CHHAAP, (a colloquial name for printing or printmaking) was established on a cooperative basis in 1999 with the aim to create and promote wider appreciation of original prints and printmaking techniques.

 

 It is a non - profit organization founded Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh, Vijay Bagodi and Kavita Shah offers opportunities to artists and printmakers to work with different printmaking media and is frequented by renowned and international artists, printmaking enthusiasts and art students.

 

More than 40 international artists have participated in its Residency program so far in the well established print studio as well as Artist-in-Residency facilities for etching, dry point, lino-cut woodcut and mono-prints.

 

CHHAAP has been primarily involved in creating print portfolios, conducting workshops on print making techniques. It also holds talks by eminent and visiting artists, promotes print making techniques as well as print exhibitions internationally and nationally.

 

To facilitate the sharing of print making knowledge, often through outreach programs, seminars and camps and are conducted at times to culminate in annual print shows.

 

CHHAAP is based at Baroda, a major hub for Indian contemporary art scene.

Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh

Gulam Mohammed Sheikh is an internationally renowned Indian painter, writer and art critic. He is the recipient of the prestigious Padmashri award in 1983 and Padmabhushan in 2014, both for his contribution to art.
Sheikhbhai as he is fondly called, started his career in 1960 when he joined as a teacher in the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Vadodara. His many teaching positions have included teaching art history in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda and as Professor of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda. He has been a Visiting Artist at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1987 and 2002, and a Writer/Artist in Residence at Civitella Ranieri Center, Umbertide, Italy (1998), at the University of Pennsylvania (2002), and at Montalvo, California (2005).
Sheikhbhai has been a major figure in the world of Indian art for more than four decades. He has participated in major exhibitions all over the world and his works are displayed in private and public collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, USA. Gulam has been active not merely as an artist but also as a teacher and writer.

Kavita Shah

Kavita Shah, did masters in visual arts from Faculty of Fine Arts, Vadodara. She is practicing artist and managing trustee of Chhaap Foundation since 15 years. She has taught art in Navrachana, Bhavans, Faculty of Fine Arts, NID, APEID and College of Architecture. Kavita has made presentations and given talk in Mohile Parekh Center, National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, Telugu University, Hyderabad, Chicago Art college, USA, Impact 5, Tallin and Goa Art and Literaray Festival, India. She was invited by French Embassy to participate in Le Mois de l’estemps in Paris, worked with legendary print maker Robert Blackburn in New York and went to Berlin on ATSA fellowship to work with GlogauAir.
Kavita has curated and compiled many print portfolios and travelling shows in many cities in India and abroad. Her works are in National Assembly, Paris, Novotel Hotel, Vidhan Sabha, Bhopal, IPCL and many private collections.

Vijay Baghodi

Vijay Baghodi did his masters from Faculty of Fine Arts Baroda where he currently is the head of the department of Graphics. Vijay has been invited to participate in several national and international exhibitions, and has also conducted many printmaking workshops. He participated in the "XI TRIENNALE INDIA -2005", an International Exhibition of Contemporary Art at New Delhi. In the same year, he was invited to take part in the Biennial XXXVIII International Artists symposium and workshop at Gyor, Hungary through a cultural exchange program.

Vasudevan Akkitham

Vasudevan Akkitham was born at Kumaranallur, Kerala in 1958. He completed his Diploma and Post Diploma from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. He is Fine Artist and Head of Department of Painting,Faculty of Visual Arts, M.S.University, Vadodara. In 1988 he did his MA from the Royal College of Art, London. He has illustrated a children’s book by Safdar Hashmi. He has held a number of solo exhibitions including two at Gallery 7 in 1989 and 1992 and another at Sakhi Gallery in Bombay again in 1992. He has also been a participant in a number of group exhibitions, notable among them being one in aid of earthquake victims in 1993 in Faridabad and ‘Gadya Parr’ Show, Gallery Chemould, Bombay in 1989. His work is a part of several reputed collections such as the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi, Madhavan Nair Museum, Cochin and the Chester Herwitz Family Trust Collection, USA.

Archana Hande

Archana Hande's artwork and creative practice has always extended into diverse modes, venues, concerns and forms. She has with ease slipped into the intersecting roles of activist, facilitator, interventionist, and maker all wrapped into one. Her interests have led her to draw upon a variety of resources, her projects having often taken-on an involved collaborative spirit. Archana Hande lives and works out of Banaglore, the city of her birth (1970), and Mumbai. She has a B.F.A in printmaking from Viswa-Bharati, Santiniketan (1986-1991), and an M.F.A in printmaking from M. S. University, Baroda (1991-1993). In 2000, she won the Charles Wallace India Trust Arts Award to participate in the Glasgow School of Arts Residency Program.

The Chhaap Foundation provides consultation services to private, corporate and government bodies in setting up their art collections. We have a strong team of Curators who help our clients in build their collections which boost their cultural capital and cultural identity. Chhaap due to its network with national and international artist forums and art studios has built a large collection of art works. This collection helps Chhaap to provide with artists of not just national repute but of international repute as well. Chhaap is also active in curating as well as participating in international print portfolios. This has helped Chhaap build a large collection of its own in the past decade. Moreover this has led to creating customized works/projects for corporate and private clients. Due to its history with print making Chhaap has generated exciting and exquisite art works for its clients.

Chhaap has one of the largest collection of cataloged art works of artists from across the globe. Due to its rapport with artists and studios; nationally and internationally, Chhaap has built a large collection of paintings, sculptures, prints, and works in other medias as well. Our collection consists of works by artists of the likes of K.G. Subramanyan, Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh, Nilima Sheikh, Jyoti Bhatt, T. Vaikuntham, Dhruva Mistry, Surendran Nair, Meher Afroz, Zarina Hashmi and so on. Our collection is regularly updated with significant works of contemporary artists of the younger generation.
